QGENICS BIOSCIENCES, INC. Changes its Name to Protein Discovery, Inc.
Knoxville, TN, April 14, 2004—QGENICS BIOSCIENCES, INC. announced today that the company has officially changed its name to Protein Discovery, Inc. The company’s new name more clearly reflects a strategy focused on providing innovative, enabling tools for protein-based research and drug discovery. Through its proprietary sample preparation technology, Protein Discovery aims to provide researchers in the life sciences industry with instruments that will significantly improve data quality, speed of analysis, and ease of use in preparing biological samples for mass analysis.
We believe that our new name better reflects the nature of our business, stated Chuck Witkowski, President, CEO and founder of Protein Discovery. “Our team is committed to providing proteomics customers with product solutions that enable more efficient and reproducible preparation of complex biological samples for analysis. In doing so, the technology significantly improves the quality of data generated and enables the discovery of low copy number proteins and peptides, which are critical to understanding and treating complex diseases such as cancer. With our enabling technology, what has traditionally been a week long preparation process can now be completed in less than twenty minutes. Our new name better reflects the power of this technology.
World renowned scientist Thomas Thundat, Ph.D. invented the Company’s foundation technology at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Since then, Protein Discovery has assembled an extraordinary team of scientists who are collaborating with some of the world’s leading proteomics pioneers to develop the core technology into a suite of truly enabling product solutions. The Company’s proprietary technology enables direct, highly sensitive analysis of raw biological samples with unprecedented speed of analysis, throughput, and sensitivity.
About Protein Discovery Protein Discovery is a life sciences company developing turnkey systems for the rapid identification of protein and peptide expression patterns used in clinical research, drug discovery, and diagnostics. The company’s technology addresses key challenges facing protein research today, including the identification of low copy number molecules contained in complex biological samples such as serum. These types of tools are required by clinical researchers to better understand the molecular basis for disease and cost-effectively develop successful diagnostics and pharmaceutical drug treatments. Protein Discovery has received support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), National Science Foundation (NSF), National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Southeast Community Capital Corporation, and Memphis Biomed Ventures I, L.P. The Company is located in Knoxville, Tennessee.
