Frantisek Svec PhD Joins Scientific Advisory Board of Protein Discovery, Inc.
Knoxville, March 30, 2006—PProtein Discovery, Inc., a privately held life sciences company, today announced that Frantisek Svec Ph.D., an accomplished polymer chemist and inventor, has joined the company's scientific advisory board.
Frantisek Svec is well-known for his contributions to the development of the monolithic chromatography column. In collaboration with Jean Fréchet Ph.D., he developed technology for the manipulation of the structure and composition of porous polymers, enabling the design of monolithic chromatographic media with specific structural and chemical properties. Monolithic porous-polymer chromatography columns have greatly improved the speed, resolution, and reproducibility of chromatographic separations for a wide variety of molecules, including peptides and proteins. Presently conducting research at the University of California, Berkeley and at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Dr. Svec continues to investigate the synthesis of new separations media for use in both conventional and microscale format systems.
Frantisek Svec is author or co-author of hundreds of peer-reviewed scientific papers, and has written or edited numerous book chapters related to his fields of expertise. He is president of the California Separations Science Society and serves on the editorial boards of several prestigious scientific journals. In 2005, Dr. Svec won the M.J.E. Golay Award and the EAS Award for his contributions to the field of separations science. Dr. Svec received a BS degree in chemistry and a PhD degree in polymer chemistry from the Institute of Chemical Technology, Prague (Czech Republic).
Chuck Witkowski, chief executive officer of Protein Discovery, said, "Frantisek Svec has the unusual ability to form connections between new scientific information and the practical needs of researchers. In doing so, he has brought about discontinuous improvements in separations science and has greatly expanded the productivity of researchers in pharma and other industries."
"Protein Discovery's new approach to the separation and characterization of proteins is unique in both its enormous efficiency and simplicity to perform," said Dr. Svec. "It is deeply satisfying to see such a smart and obviously useful application of polymer chemistry technology."
Frantisek Svec joins a distinguished roster of fellow scientists and inventors on Protein Discovery's scientific advisory board, including Richard Caprioli Ph.D., David Hachey Ph.D., Dean Hafeman Ph.D., Nathan Lewis Ph.D., Michael Sailor PhD, Mike Story, and Thomas Thundat Ph.D.
