Dean Hafeman PhD to Spotlight Optical and Electrophoretic Options for MALDI Sample Prep at Latsis Symposium 2007
KNOXVILLE, TN, (MARKET WIRE) June 20, 2007—The Latsis Symposium 2007, to be held June 25 - 27 in Lausanne, Switzerland, will feature Dean Hafeman PhD, chief scientific officer of Protein Discovery, Inc., who will address the topic of "Optically directed and conventional electrophoretic transport, separation, and 3D concentration of proteins for MALDI mass spectrometry." Dr. Hafeman joins a distinguished roster of selected speakers from prestigious research institutions in Europe and the United States. The three-day Latsis Symposium research meeting is dedicated to emerging technologies using laser light for trapping microscale and nanoscale particles in liquid for the purpose of studying molecular interactions.
Dr. Hafeman is the corresponding author of "Optically directed molecular transport and 3D isoelectric positioning of amphoteric biomolecules," a scientific paper published last year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) journal by scientists from Protein Discovery, the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the California Institute of Technology. The paper describes a new mode of light-driven protein transport called "photoelectrophoretic localization and transport" (PELT). With capabilities such as isoelectric point bracketing, bulk movement of charged molecules, and analyte concentration, PELT technology may represent a nanoscale alternative to conventional means of clinical sample preparation for MALDI mass spectrometry analysis. Protein Discovery holds patent rights to PELT.
Dr. Hafeman has provided key scientific leadership to clinical instrumentation companies including Molecular Devices Corporation (now part of MDS Analytical Technologies), Caliper Life Sciences, Inc., and Signature Biosciences. He is author or co-author of dozens of peer-reviewed journal articles, and a co-inventor of dozens of technology patents issued by the US Patent and Trademark Office.
Protein Discovery is a privately held life science company providing mass spectrometry services and bioanalytical sample preparation solutions for life science research, drug development, and clinical diagnostics. For additional information, please visit www.proteindiscovery.com.
